Street Food along London's South Bank

A couple of Sundays ago Patrick & I decided to have a little stroll along the South Bank in London to find somewhere to have some lunch...
As we walked up from Waterloo tube station to get to the river we stumbled upon this street food market tucked away behind Royal Fesitval Hall. Even though it wasn't quite yet lunchtime we couldn't resist the smells from the various food stalls and so made a slight detour through the market. I later found out this is the Real Food Market, it's open Friday-Sunday all year round and supports small producers with quality products.
We found a cool, little, retro-looking van that opens out to be a mobile coffee shop, very aptly named "Bean About Town"
We particularly enjoyed looking at the delights that were on offer at The Polish Deli London...
...and couldn't resist trying a pork 'Pierogi'. It's like a deep-fried dumpling that has a savory filling and, what with it being the first thing we had eaten that day, it was mouth watering-ly delicious.
We also ogled over the mammoth sized wheels of creamy comté & aged gouda. Comté is my favourite cheese, it's really worth a try if you can find some. I normally find it at foodie markets like this one. I believe this one if from The Borough Cheese Company.
Ok, ok, I got a bit snap happy at this point but how yummy does the food from Horn Ok Please look?!
We then had a little mooch around and admired the crazy yet very cool street art that's dotted around various areas along the South Bank.
In the end we decided to go for Mexican food at Wahaca for lunch. This particular one is an experimental space built out of recycled shipping containers (pretty cool hey?). It's located just below the Queen Elizabeth Hall and just above the infamous Southbank skatepark and offers a pretty fantastic view out over the river.
We admired the quirky, rustic interior of Wahaca.
We had a browse through the nifty wood block menus and if I can remember rightly these were Chicken Tinga Tacos..yum!

If you're coming to London anytime you should definitely have a stroll along the South Bank. It's one of my favourite places in central London to soak up some culture and just hang out with friends.

Hope you enjoyed this foodie post, please let me know your favourite things to do in London!

  1. the boyf and I were at this market on sunday after seeing the Martin Creed exhibition at the Hayward Gallery (which is worth a look btw). There were so many good smells coming from all the stalls, it's pretty impossible to make a choice! Went to Wahaca for the first time last month and I shall definitely be returning again soon :)
